ESG Power BI Reporting

Background

Our client is a multinational mining company based in Vancouver, Canada and one of the largest gold producers in North America, with 9 mining sites across the Americas.

Challenge

They relied heavily on connected Excel sheets, which were then published as reports. This workflow led to inefficiencies and limited scalability. The objective was to replace Excel-based reporting with fully interactive Power BI dashboards, ensuring real-time data availability, automation, and improved visualization. The client’s reporting process was inefficient due to manual Excel manipulations, leading to: • Inconsistent reporting due to data versioning issues. • High manual effort in preparing reports, taking multiple hours weekly. • Limited interactivity compared to Power BI dashboards. • Lack of visibility into certain numbers and metrics that were previously unavailable, which are now accessible through the new dashboards, providing a deeper understanding of their data. By transitioning to Power BI, the client gained real-time insights, reduced manual effort, and improved reporting accuracy.

Approach

Figma was used to design custom backgrounds for the Power BI reports, ensuring an intuitive and visually appealing user interface. The project was focused on 8 different business segments, helping the client gain better insights into workforce analytics, trends, and performance tracking. • Requirement Gathering: Engaged with stakeholders to define key metrics and reporting needs. • Dashboard Development: Designed and built Power BI dashboards to replace Excel-based reporting. • Data Transformation: Utilized Power BI and DAX to restructure and enhance data analysis. • Wireframing & Prototyping: Created Power BI wireframes for stakeholder approval before dashboard development.

Key results

Time saving: 1-2 weeks per business segment for report construction to daily refreshed data.

Segregation of duties: the team maintaining the logic and making changes was also creating the reports and validating them. Now duties are segregated reducing audit risk.
