Tableau Server to Cloud Migration for an American Outdoor Retailer

Background

Our client is a privately held American retail company specializing in clothing, footwear, and outdoor recreation equipment. Known for its heritage, classic New England style, and emphasis on durability, the brand has been a staple of American outdoor culture for over a century.

Challenge

As a legacy American retail leader managing an extensive omni-channel footprint, the client faced mounting operational friction and a widening innovation gap due to its on-premise Tableau Server architecture. Internal IT teams were heavily burdened by routine maintenance, manual upgrades, and security patching, which distracted from core analytics initiatives and locked the organization out of cloud-first AI tools like Tableau Pulse and Agentic AI workflows. The sheer scale of their ecosystem, comprising over 700 data sources, 200 business workbooks, and 700 automated subscriptions, demanded a highly strategic migration approach to eliminate local infrastructure management, future-proof their reporting, and transition seamlessly to Tableau Cloud without disrupting critical retail operations.

Approach

Keyrus met with relevant stakeholders to scope the project and requirements. Based on the analysis of the items to be moved to the Cloud and the extract schedules, we suggest the number of Tableau Bridges that are required to be run, then provided a roadmap of the tasks (Migration of Workbooks, Data sources and subscriptions) and an estimated timeline for the project.

Key results

01
Moving to Tableau Cloud from Tableau Server allowed the client for "Zero Infrastructure Management" for Reporting/Dashboarding.
02
Modern, cutting-edge AI tools, like Tableau Pulse (automated metrics/insights) and Tableau Next MCP (Agentic AI), are rolled out first and optimized natively for Tableau Cloud.
03
Time reduction in manual maintenance and management. Tableau Cloud updates automatically with the latest features, security patches, and bug fixes several times a year. Internal IT team doesn't have to spend weekends doing manual upgrades.

Benefits

The project provided the client with a cloud environment for Tableau development. It reduced the use of on-premise services, therefore eliminating the need to manage servers to run Tableau Server.
