Background

Our client is a cloud-based e-procurement software company specializing in the biotech and life sciences sectors. They provide technology solutions to streamline purchasing, helping organizations manage everything from vendor relationships and sourcing to contracts and spend analysis. Their software automates manual tasks, improves supplier interactions, strengthens compliance, and offers better insights into procurement operations through robust analytics and reporting.

Challenge

Since our client is a cloud-based procurement platform designed specifically for biotech companies, their primary focus is helping streamline purchasing processes in a highly regulated industry. As their user base grew, so did the demand for more advanced analytics capabilities within the application. They recognized that their platform was falling behind competitors due to limited built-in analytics. To stay competitive and deliver greater value to their users, they needed a modern, embedded analytics solution supported by a scalable data architecture. Without the internal expertise to build such a platform, they turned to Keyrus for help. They chose Keyrus not only for our deep knowledge of the required tools and technologies, but also for our ability to move quickly, apply best practices, and draw from experience with similar clients. Additionally, their data and analytics team was still forming, and Keyrus helped bridge that gap, supporting everything from platform design to defining team roles, development workflows, deployment processes, and training.

Approach

Keyrus approached our client's data platform project with a phased, collaborative strategy designed to ensure scalability, transparency, and long-term value. We began with a 6-week proof of concept (POC), during which we configured the selected open-source tools and developed a foundational data model, one of the most critical to their operations. As part of the POC, Keyrus conducted interviews with stakeholders to understand their business model, key requirements, and growth objectives. Our team performed an in-depth data analysis to determine the optimal design for a scalable, future-ready architecture. Throughout the POC, we maintained close collaboration with our client's team, providing frequent demonstrations of new features and maintaining a high level of transparency. The POC concluded successfully, delivering a functional minimum viable product (MVP). Alongside the MVP, Keyrus provided a comprehensive project plan for scaling to an enterprise-grade solution, along with platform recommendations and estimated licensing and service costs. Following the POC, we transitioned into full implementation, evolving the MVP into an enterprise platform. This phase included the introduction of data quality checks, monitoring, alerting, and comprehensive documentation. Keyrus worked in two-week sprints, delivering new features bi-weekly. Just like in the POC, we engaged our client throughout development, incorporating continuous feedback. We also provided training and knowledge transfer to ensure their team fully understood the architecture, platform processes, and their new responsibilities within the data environment.

Democratized Data Access and Scalable Analytics: The new platform empowers users with accessible analytics by centralizing data into a single source. While it currently integrates one source, it is designed to scale, allowing users to blend multiple data sources and build cross-functional insights directly within the same platform.

Offloaded Operational Load from Source Systems: By separating analytical workloads from the operational database, the new platform ensures that non-operational queries no longer impact the performance of the operational database. All analytical processes now run through the data platform, improving system efficiency and stability.

Embedded Reporting Capabilities: With the new data platform in place, our client can now create and embed dynamic reports directly into their application. This is powered by Snowflake’s scalability, enabling seamless and performant data experiences for end users.
